Bioprospecting for Exopolysaccharides from Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vent Bacteria: Relationship between Bacterial Diversity and Chemical Diversity ArchiMer
Delbarre-ladrat, Christine; Salas, Marcia Leyva; Sinquin, Corinne; Zykwinska, Agata; Colliec-jouault, Sylvia.
Many bacteria biosynthesize structurally diverse exopolysaccharides (EPS) and excrete them into their surrounding environment. The EPS functional features have found many applications in industries such as cosmetics and pharmaceutics. In particular, some EPS produced by marine bacteria are composed of uronic acids, neutral sugars, and N-acetylhexosamines, and may also bear some functional sulfate groups. This suggests that they can share common structural features with glycosaminoglycans (GAG) like the two EPS (HE800 and GY785) originating from the deep sea. In an attempt to discover new EPS that may be promising candidates as GAG-mimetics, fifty-one marine bacterial strains originating from deep-sea hydrothermal vents were screened. The analysis of the...

Effect Of pH, Phosphate and/or Malate on Sulfate Sorption on Andisols R.C. Suelo Nutr. Veg.
Pigna,Massimo; Jara,Alejandra A; Mora,María de la Luz; Violante,Antonio.
The sulfate sorption was studied on Andisols with variable mineralogical composition and low organic matter content in presence and absence of phosphate or malate ligands at different pH. Crystalline clay mineralogy was similar for all the studied samples, except for the 2C horizon of the pedon 2, which did not show crystalline minerals. The soil samples showed content of allophane ranging from 16% to 42%. The sulfate adsorption decreased when descending the first 3 horizons (A1, 2A2 and 3Bw1) of the pedon 1. This behavior was attributed to the decreasing organic carbon content. At different pH sulfate sorption was drastically decreased by increasing the pH from 4.0 to 7.0, precisely by 80% for sample 5 to 100% for sample 1. Experiments on the competitive...

Sources and rates of potassium for sweet orange production Scientia Agricola
Quaggio,José Antonio; Mattos Junior,Dirceu; Boaretto,Rodrigo Marcelli.
Fruit yield and quality of citrus trees (Citrus spp.) is markedly affected by potassium (K) fertilization. Potassium chloride is the major source of K, even though other sources are also available for agricultural use when crops are sensitive to chloride or where potential for accumulation of salts in soils exists. Only few studies addressed the effect of K sources on yield and quality of citrus fruits. Therefore, the present study was conducted to evaluate K2SO4 and KCl fertilizer sources at 0, 100, 200, and 300 kg ha-1 per year K2O on fruit yield and quality of 'Pêra' and 'Valencia' sweet orange trees in the field. The experiments were carried out in a 4 × 2 factorial design under randomized complete blocks, with four replicates from 2001 to 2004. Fruit...

Sulfur modulates yield and storage proteins in soybean grains Scientia Agricola
Ibañez,Thiago Bergamini; Santos,Luiz Felipe de Melo; Lapaz,Allan de Marcos; Ribeiro,Igor Virgilio; Ribeiro,Filipe Virgilio; Reis,André Rodrigues dos; Moreira,Adônis; Heinrichs,Reges.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the nutritional quality, yield, and storage protein modulation in soybean grains in response to levels and sources of sulfur (S) in a dystrophic Ultisol. We used five levels of S (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mg kg –1 ) and four sources of S (elemental S pastille - ESPA, gypsum - GY, gypsite - GI and elemental S powder - ESPO). Plants treated with 50 mg kg –1 of GY, GI, and ESPO and 200 mg kg –1 of ESPA had the largest grain yield values. Low S supply resulted in lower yields for all S sources tested. Sulfur deficiencies were observed at all levels for ESPA, resulting in lower concentrations of globulin and higher concentration of glutelin and albumin in the grains, possibly because the S content in the leaf was below the range...

ความเป็นไปได้ของการใช้สารปรับปรุงดินเพื่อลดก๊าซเรือนกระจกและขณะเดียวกันรักษาผลผลิตข้าว: รายงานการวิจัยฉบับสมบูรณ์ Thai Agricultural
Patcharee Saenjan; Daungsamorn Tulapithak; Kasuyuki Inbuchi.
Field experiment was conducted in farmer’s rice field with loamy soil in Khon Kaen province, northeast of Thailand during to study the effect of different levels of sulfate (SO42-) on methane emission and rice yield. SO42- was applied at the rate of 0, 50, 100, and 210 kg SO42- ha-1 by using ammonium phosphate (42% SO42-) with balanced amount of 80 kg N, 100 kg P2O5 and 80 kg K2O ha-1 by adding various fertilizers. The experiment was laid out in randomized completely block design (RCBD) with tripled replication. CH4 flux was measured every week by using closed chambers method. Global warming potential (GWP) was also calculated. Soil samples were collage at each growth stage to determine SO42-, NH4+ and Fe2+. Rice yield was measured at harvest. The...

ผลของซัลเฟตและยูเรียต่อการผลิตก๊าซมีเทนในดินนาภายใต้สภาพการบ่มดินในห้องปฏิบัติการ Thai Agricultural
Patcharee Senjaen; Sophoanrith Ro; Thepparit Tulaphitak.
Methane is one of important greenhouse gases emitted from submerged paddy soil under anaerobic condition. The objective of the present experiment was to study the influence of sulfate and urea on methane production in paddy soil. Four rates of sulfate (0, 50, 100 and 210 kg SO42- ha-1) were set up by using ammonium phosphate (16-20-0, 42 % sulfate) with the amount of N, P2O5 and K2O for each treatment being balanced by using urea, rock phosphate and potassium chloride. In addition, soil without urea application was prepared. All soils were incubated in bottles for 21 days in oxygen-free nitrogen ambient. Result showed that there is a linear relationship with negative correlation between methane production in soil and sulfate contents. The soil without urea...
